3 Step plan to save for vacation…without going into debt!

It’s that time of year!  You have been depressed during the long winter months and counting down the days until it gets warm and sunny. It’s right around the corner.  The first thing on your list is planning your summer vacation.  You have saved up all your vacation days at work, you know where you want to go, and you are dreaming of relaxing every single day without a care in the world…….. but wait…….You just realized that you neglected to set up a way to pay for it all.

The last thing you want is a repeat of last Christmas when you spent the next 4 months paying for all of those expensive presents. Vacation costs need to be planned for……a time away with family, kicking back and soaking up the rays……not stressing about how you will pay for it!

Here are 3 steps to ensure a totally relaxing vacation before, during, and after.

  1. Get an estimate of how much your trip is going to cost you.  Look at hotel, or rental home costs.  Figure the cost of gas.  Plan some fun activities to do each day, and calculate the cost of food.  Add an extra two hundred dollars for the unexpected. Now you have an estimate of the costs, divide that by the number of weeks that you have before your bags are packed. Save that amount each week.
  2. Set up a separate savings account dedicated to vacation savings. Contribute to your vacation fund each payday.
  3. Stay focused…..  Most people fail at goals because they allow themselves to get sidetracked and spend that money on unnecessary things.  Just keep in mind how much you enjoy spending quality time with your family….. away from the daily grind.

Creating a habit and sticking with it, is a great lesson in life.  If you can set a goal, and work towards that goal with vigor, it will be well worth your giving up immediate desires of frivolous purchases that can cause you to go into debt for a vacation.
